Rename an Installation or Location in AutoCAD Electrical

I was trying to rename an Installation Code in AutoCAD Electrical but having no luck. Eventually, I found a forum that suggested using Find/Edit/Replace Component Text. I believe it was this one: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-electrical-ideas/rename-location/idi-p/6226575. Since I had a hard enough time finding a reasonable solution, I thought I’d share it here just to “spread the word.”

Please also visit the above link and add your vote for the ability to “rename an installation and location and have all components assigned to that installation/location move automatically.”

Use the Find/Edit/Replace Component Text tool

  1. To open the Find/Edit/Replace Component Text tool, select Schematic > Edit Components > Find/Edit/Replace Component Text from the ribbon or enter WD_FR at the command prompt.
  1. Choose the scope of the modification: Project, Active drawing (all), or Active drawing (pick). Click OK.
Find/Edit/Replace Component Text scope selection dialog
  1. Select the drawings to affect on the Select Drawings to Process dialog. Click OK.
  2. Specify the text to Find and the text to Replace it in the Installation Code and/or Location Code boxes. Click OK.

Note that this Replace Component Text tool replaces component text. It does not rename installations or locations on Location Boxes or in the Installation Code or Location Code fields of Drawing Properties – those you’ll have to change with other methods. Perhaps there’s a fancy way to do it using LISP, but I manually did it with Edit Location Box and by modifying Drawing Properties.

While researching this topic, I stumbled on the Location View of the Project Manager. It looked like the ideal place to put a Rename Installation/Location tool. But alas there was no such tool on the toolbar nor in the context menu when right-clicking an installation or location in the tree. This was in AutoCAD Electrical 2021, maybe I’ll check out AutoCAD Electrical 2023. But I’m not getting my hopes up.
